Ruapehu Cycle Classic                      10 Feb – 12 Feb 2012

Back for a sixth year, the 2012 event comes with a twist. Now part of BikeNZ’s Summer Series, the Ruapehu Cycle Classic has a new format that promises three awesome days of pedal power in the Central Plateau.

There are three events to choose from or why not challenge yourself to the weekend tour and do them all?  A great way to start the weekend, and a real crowd pleaser, sprint for glory in the Friday night Criterium around the streets of Ohakune. Saturday’s traditional Ruapehu Cycle Challenge now brings you a choice of two distances: 80kms or 160kms of pure cycling pleasure. Finish your weekend on Sunday with the Race to the Sky, a grueling 17km  road climb from the base of the Ohakune Mountain road to the car park of Turoa ski field taking in some of New Zealand’s most majestic scenery along the way.

Stanton Memorial on Mt Ruapehu
We will be walking in from the Top O Bruce car park. Transport cost $12.00.
The history: In 1931 fourteen Auckland University students set out from the Chateau to climb Ruapehu.

The weather was fine. Blizzard conditions struck while the party was at the summit and visibility was nil. While descending the Whakapapa glacier, the students drifted across to the left and became hopelessly lost. The party split into several groups and spent between one and three nights on the mountain, still in blizzard conditions. All survived apart from Warwick Stanton, aged 18, who set off on the third day in an effort to get help. His body was found after three weeks, in the forest on a tributary of the Makatote. The large rock, with the plaque, known as the Stanton memorial, was where the party spent the first night. The walk will be off track for most of the day. There are excellent views of mountains, waterfalls and alpine vegetation.

Raetihi Gutbuster – Fun Bike Ride                08 Apr 2012

Starts 11.30am outside the Waimarino Museum. This event is an 18km out and back ride part-way along the Raetihi – Pipiriki road. Starting and finishing at the Waimarino Museum on Seddon Street in Raetihi, the ride starts with a long downhill then becomes a rolling ride through scenic and historic farmland before a 2km uphill section to the turnaround point at the intersection of the Waipuna road.

At the turnaround there will be a drink station and, weather permitting, a beautiful view of the three volcanoes of the Central Plateau: Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. Then turn around and experience the thrill of flying down the hill you just rode up. Check out the unusual hilly formations on your left as you go. Riding back to Raetihi you will be tested again as you ascend the final hill back to the finish at the museum.

Safety is paramount, riders need to be aware that no roads will be closed during the event, and there will be other traffic in both directions. Normal road rules apply, all bikes must be roadworthy and helmets must be worn.

At the finish line there will be music and food and drinks available, there will be spot prizes
and maybe some Easter Eggs too!

Te Kuiti to Waitomo Walkway
This is a new walkway that follows farmland between Waitomo and Te Kuiti. It has good views of an area we have not been in before.  It is a 6 hour medium-grade tramp. Expect hills with 150m ascents and descents. The track is steep sometimes, but it'll be one of our best pastoral outings. It pauses on top of high karsts to stare across the King Country's low agriculture, and tumbled limestone hills that rise to formidable volcanic summits – north to Pirongia, east to Pureora, and south to Ruapehu. Also, on the lowest point, the track enters the Pehitawa Forest.
 Transport Cost $20.00
