Cherry Grove is a public domain in Taumarunui where the Whanganui River and the Ongarue River meet.
This is the main entry point for the start of the Whanganui River Journey, one of the classic 'Great New Zealand Walks' although it is by canoe.
Cherry Grove is also used by the many kayakers and jet boats who enjoy the excitement on the Whanganui River.
The Whanganui River begins high up in the volcanic plateau of the central North Island at Mt Tongariro, then travels north towards Taumarunui before heading south for 260km towards Wanganui. Its journey to the sea passes through the native tree and fern clad hills of the Whanganui National Park. The upper reaches of the river are cloaked in dense rainforest and lead to the deeply incised gorges of the middle reaches. Tree ferns and rare native plants cling to the steep riverbanks.
Taumarunui has a Tarrangower Golf Course on Golf Road, not far from the Twin Rivers Motel.
Each hole represents a different challenge with the tree lined fairways leading to well guarded target greens.
The trees in this part of the world grow tall and straight, attesting the free draining soils and the lowest wind flow in New Zealand.
The huge Redwoods watching over the 18th Tee are only 60 years old and bear testimony to the district’s moderate climate.
